A 50B is a restraining order that can be filed against someone that you have had an intimate relationship with (spouse, household member, parent/child, etc.) You must be 18 years old to file a 50B and if you are under 18, a parent or guardian must fill it out on your behalf. There needs to have been physical violence, a threat of physical violence, or emotional abuse that has occurred within the last month. An advocate will assist you with the paperwork, then you must file it at the courthouse where a judge will decide to temporarily grant it or not and give you a court date. Then you must go to the Sheriff's Office so they can serve the person with the 50B. On your court date, you will testify to the judge about the situation, and the judge will decide whether or not to grant it for a year.
