chapter 50B statutes

A 50(B) is a Domestic Violence Protective Order also known as a Restraining Order. It is a legal order issued by the Judge to protect a person from physical abuse or threatening behavior by another. It is granted in cases of domestic violence to protect the health and safety of you or your minor child from someone with whom you have had a "personal relationship." This means you can seek protection from:

  • Your spouse or ex-spouse.

  • A person of the opposite sex with whom you live or used to live.

  • Someone you are related to, including parents, children, grandparents, and grandchildren, over the age of 16.

  • Someone with whom you have a child in common.

  • A current or former household member.

  • Someone of the opposite sex who you are dating or have dated.
