Protective Orders & Court Advocacy

A protective order can be an important tool for individuals experiencing domestic violence or other unsafe situations. The Family Crisis Center provides advocacy and support to help you understand your options, navigate the court process, and access resources.
 

Our advocates can assist with:

  • Information about Domestic Violence Protective Orders (50B) and Civil No-Contact Orders (50C) in North Carolina

  • Assistance understanding the protective order process

  • Help completing paperwork

  • Court accompaniment and support

  • Information about court procedures and what to expect

  • Referrals to legal resources and community partners

What is a Protective Order?  

A protective order is a civil court order that may provide legal protections for individuals experiencing domestic violence, stalking, or other unsafe situations. An advocate can provide information about the process, help you understand your options, and support you through the court process.

Is there a cost for services? 

No. All Family Crisis Center services are provided free of charge.

Are services confidential? 

Yes. The Family Crisis Center provides confidential services and protects client information in accordance with applicable laws and agency policies. Information is only shared with your permission or when required by law.

Can you help me find housing or financial assistance?  

Yes. We can connect you with emergency shelter, housing resources, financial assistance programs, and other community services based on availability and your needs.

Do I need to report to law enforcement? 

No. You can receive services whether or not you choose to report to law enforcement. Our advocates will provide information about your options and support whatever decision is right for you.

Can the Family Crisis Center help with custody, divorce, or other legal matters?

The Family Crisis Center does not provide legal representation or legal advice. We are unable to assist with matters such as child custody, child support, divorce, property disputes, criminal defense, or other civil legal issues. However, we can provide information, advocacy, and referrals to legal resources and community partners who may be able to assist with your specific situation.
