Understanding Your Rights as a Crime Victim

If you have experienced a crime, you may have rights and protections under North Carolina law. Understanding your rights can help you make informed decisions, access support, and participate in the criminal justice process.

The Family Crisis Center provides advocacy and support to help individuals understand their options and connect with available resources. We do not provide legal advice, but we can help connect you with information and community resources. 

​​Victims of crime in North Carolina have rights that may include:  

• Receive information about available services and resources 

• Be treated with fairness, dignity, and respect 

• Receive information about the criminal justice process 

• Receive information about court dates and case updates 

• Communicate with prosecutors and victim advocates 

• Provide input regarding certain decisions in the criminal justice process 

• Receive information about restitution and financial assistance resources 

• Be protected from intimidation, harassment, and retaliation 

• Receive support and referrals throughout the process
